Copywriting for Twitter to Support Your Online Business

Written by CathyG on Tuesday, May 12th, 2009 in Building Traffic.

Online business marketing typically includes social marketing. Increasingly social marketing has come to mean participating in Twitter.

But many business fail to realize that their Twitter accounts need to be set up to build relationships with prospective clients, allies, suppliers and joint venture partners. Instead, they often focus on getting a nice photo and a clever, show-stopping background.

Graphic images are critical, but visitors will want to know something about who you are. They are asking themselves, “Do I want to follow this person?” If you’re trying to make connections with prospective business allies, it makes sense to help them identify you easily.

This challenges call for a special form of copywriting. Your first copywriting challenge is to create a bio that skips “cute” in favor of sharing a direct, concise statement about you and your business. Your second challenge is to create a landing page designed to meet the needs of visitors who come from Twitter instead of the search engines.

Recently I came across a business owner who had found a home on Twitter. Her tweets — the 140-character posts that Twitter allows — suggested she was a business consultant who specialized in a particular target market. My client was also targeting this very narrow, very specialized niche.

Of course I took a quick peek at the consultant’s 140-character online bio. Like many online business owners, she tried to play down her skills. She wanted to sound like an all-around nice person. So she listed a number of qualities (I’m disguising the details): mom, consultant, foodie, member of religious group, lively, sports nut and so on.

But what I really wanted to see was something like, “I work with solo-preneurs who like to cook and want to become profitable personal chefs.” Or, “I work with dentists who are trying to reach clients interested in major cosmetic changes.” I wanted to know if she worked with a specific target market and if she helped other who wanted to reach that market. If the answers were “yes” and “yes,” I could refer her to my own client.

So I skipped over to the live link she provided, hoping for a website that would make everything clear. Did I discover what this business owner offered? No! I found a nice photo and a brief sales pitch to sign up for her ezine.

Squeeze pages often make sense for capturing opt-in information from website visitors who find you through search engines. They know what they’re looking for. They mainly want to know, “Am I on the right page?”

Twitter visitors are different. They come to your Twitter home, review your Tweets, and (ideally) ask, “What’s this person about?” And, “Are you someone I might do business with?”

You need to provide a clear, simple bio and a link to a special landing page designed for Twitter-generated traffic. This single page will serve as a guide to your background, products and services, easily visible in a single glance. This way you make it easy for visitors to recognize you as a potential business ally.

How To Choose Your Autoresponder And Squeeze Pages

Written by petersal on Monday, May 11th, 2009 in Building Traffic.

When you want to build your list of prospects you will definitely need to use an autoresponder, and there are certain things to take into account when deciding which one to use out of the many available to you.You can get autoresponder scripts that you can set up on your own host, and so there is no monthly fee to pay,and you have greater control over your messages and settings, but in all honesty you may be better not using these as they are usually more trouble than they are worth. In addition to the technical hassle of setting them up in the first place, some of the scripts are unreliable, which can do harm your business, and often the autoresponder company may have relationships with the e-mail providers so that these type of scripts are more likely to get caught in the spam filters.

Although it probably will involve a monthly subscription, using a reliable autoresponder company is one of the best things you can do,as this will be a major business tool for your success, and the most commonly used are aWeber,Get Response, and E-mail Aces, with aWeber being the most popular, which is because they have a great reputation and reasonable prices, but all of the previous named have an excellent reputation.

Most companies will allow you to have unlimited lists and will help you organize them and give statistics, such as how many of your messages are opened and which links were clicked, and in addition aWeber now has advanced tracking, which will help you to figure out how to word your future messages.

One thing you do not want is for your messages to get caught in spam filters, because then the chances of people seeing your message are very slim,so you need to make sure the e-mails you send out will pass the spam filters, and that is another service that the top auto responder companies will provide for you by letting you know how likely your e-mail is to be flagged.

So all these points are to be considered when choosing your autoresponder, but you also need a way of collecting these prospect names in the first place, and here is the importance of creating a great Opt-in page or Squeeze page.

The first thing you need to realize is that the goal of your squeeze page is just to collect e-mail addresses,so you do not want to put affiliate offers or articles on this page, because it could distract your visitors from actually leaving their name and e-mail,which is what you are after,so try not to overstuff your squeeze page. While you do not want it to be too cluttered, you do want to put in some compelling text that will convince people to opt in,so around just three hundred words is fine, but do make sure that you include the benefits of signing up for the list, and definitely focus on what is in it for them if they do.

You do this by giving them a reward for free in exchange for their e-mail address, and, while this is not essential,it is a proven, very successful way to increase conversions,so you could give away an e-book,a series of articles,an audio,or anything else you can think of,and some of the physical-based businesses give away coupons or discount codes in exchange for the e-mail address.Certainly, make it very clear to them that the benefits of signing up for the list are greater than the costs, because many people are wary of doing so in this day and age,so you need to make sure you come across as a credible person, and make it very clear that you will never send spam or sell their e-mail address.

Have a look at the squeeze pages that other marketers in your niche use,to see the layout of their pages and how they have designed it,and most likely you will find that these are quite simple, and you can trigger ideas for your own page.

Online business owners often think copywriting starts with putting words together. But before you begin to develop content, you need to step back and develop the most important component in creating a website, blog or social marketing post. To increase traffic and attract targeted clients, you need an energizing vision that motivates your message.

It’s not unusual to feel overwhelmed when you begin to develop your website. And you may not be sure what your Internet presence is supposed to accomplish. But if your vision is not clear, your content will come out sounding fuzzy. Some websites have three or four different headlines on their home page, each making a different promise and pulling the visitor in a different direction.

You can avoid this sense of overwhelm by stepping back before you begin to write. When you start with a vision, you have a strong sense of purpose. Your websites are clear, focused and easy to navigate. You come across as confident and knowledgeable.

So don’t be surprised if your copywriter asks you to clarify your business vision. When your vision is clear, you don’t get hung up on questions like, “How do autoresponders work?” Instead, you ask questions like, “What’s the best way to develop relationships with this type of market?”

Of course, your vision is for your own use. Your clients and prospects probably won’t care about your vision, mission and goals. They want to know how you can help their vision.

A vision isn’t something vague like, “helpping people lead better lives.” Your vision begins by converting a “nice to have” product to create a “must have” for a desperate market. For instance, suppose you are a florist. A nice surprise bouquet for your significant other is a “nice to have.”

But suppose you have been so caught up in your work that you forgot an annniversary. Or suppose you need to send a present to a key business associate and you’re traveling. Now you have a desperate need for a reliable florist. You need someone who will deliver fresh, attractive flowers on time. You can risk a wilted, dreary arrangement.

As an online business owner, you need to find a vision that shows how you will serve these desperate buyers. You will have trouble attracting clients when you have visions like, “Learn more about yourself,” or, “Get better at goal setting.”

But it’s not hard to dig deeper. “Learn more about yourself so you can have more satisfying relationships and stop getting caught up in conflict everyday.” Try, “Secrets of goal setting that will turn your business around.”

Traffic Generation Tips - Track Your Traffic

Written by ChristianOC on Saturday, May 9th, 2009 in Building Traffic.

I remember when I first started in the world of internet marketing a few years ago. I was amazed at the concept of billions of dollars flying across the internet every day in exchange for goods and services! I remember thinking, “I only want a few hundred dollars profit every day … how hard can it be?”

Well, it turns out it’s pretty hard to generate revenue online. Actually, let me rephrase that: it turns out it takes time, experience, and patience in order to generate revenue online.

The first hurdle I had to overcome in the world of internet marketing was how to get traffic without selling my own blood to get it. So, I developed my own methods for traffic generation, all of them free, and lo and behold, I got traffic and lots of it!

Then came the sporadic sales: $10 here, $100 there, and soon my internet marketing bank account started to swell. I had figured out how to dip my hand into the ever constant flow of money on the internet and take a few dollars for myself. It was wonderful. I had found a business concept that allowed me to work from home and earn money.

After establishing a decent monthly income to pay the bills and enjoy a nice dinner every once in a while, I started wondering where exactly my converting traffic was coming from. It’s great to get sales, but I began to realize how important it was to know exactly where the traffic originated.

Look at it this way: if I had built 100 locations on the internet for generating traffic to my product, and only 25 of them were actually generating sales, it would be a smart idea to replicate those 25 locations again, wouldn’t it? Yes, it would! If I knew exactly which 25 locations produced sales, I could bypass the other 75 areas and increase my earnings exponentially with less effort.

That’s when I started researching how to track my traffic. If you’re an affiliate marketer, it’s pretty easy. Every affiliate network and CPA network will allow you to attach what is called a ’subid’ to your affiliate links. For subids, I usually pick a simple abbreviation of the traffic source and then a number directly after it.

For example, I own two dozen squidoo lenses that generate traffic for home improvement tools. For each link, I use a subid in the following format: squi1234. The “squi” tells me that the traffic came from my squidoo lenses, and the “1234″ tells me exactly which lens the visitor came from.

The subid gets attached to the end of my affiliate link. Whenever someone clicks on that link, the affiliate network tracks the subid. When I log into my affiliate account, I can generate reports on clicks and actual conversions. I will know immediately which squidoo lenses are generating traffic, which of them are generating sales, and which ones are doing absolutely nothing.

If you aren’t a part of an affiliate network and you are trying to track your own traffic to better understand where your traffic is coming from (and want to know exactly which traffic source is converting), you will need to install professional tracking software.

There are paid tracking systems and there are free tracking systems, such as Google Analytics, which can help you track your Adwords traffic. And Google’s Webmaster Tools can help you analyze your internet traffic, converting keywords, and converting traffic sources. It can also show you where your website seems to fail in the conversion process.

Google’s free tracking tools are great because they’re free and they teach you how to get started tracking results. The downfall is they miss a lot of data. I’d guess they will miss at least 50% of your results because their tracking methods are weak and quite often fail to track any data whatsoever. What’s the solution? Pixel Tracking Software.

Pixel tracking software can be expensive to purchase and complicated to install. But in my opinion, it’s the best method for tracking conversion data. Your profits and or lead generation rates will soar once you implement a pixel tracking system on your site. Not only will your conversion rates increase, your marketing spend will decrease at the same time. It’s worth the time and investment to install professional tracking software!

Traffic Generation Tips - Own More Internet

Written by ChristianOC on Saturday, May 9th, 2009 in Building Traffic.

The Los Angeles freeways twist and turn their way through hills and valleys, orange groves and concrete parking lots, and they are incessantly packed with two things: cars and billboards.

The traffic (not surprisingly) has steadily gotten worse over the years as more and more people move to southern CA with movie star dreams or simply with the hope of living the American Dream. Or maybe they just want to live on the beach. Any day of the week you can jump on the 405 freeway and expect a knot of traffic whenever it intersects with another freeway or simply gets near LAX.

Because of all that traffic, you will find billboards alongside every stretch of the freeway. I mean, if people are stuck on the freeway and forced to drive a certain path to and from work everyday, you have a captive audience. Why not throw a sign in front of their eyes and try to sell them something? It’s pretty obvious when you think about: throw an advertisement in front of guaranteed traffic and you’re bound to generate sales. The internet is no different.

When it comes to the internet, there are sites that generate lots of traffic and then there are sites that generate zero traffic. Plus, there are millions of locations in between.

So, where’s the best spot to advertise your business or service? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out! You should place your text ads, banners, and sales pitches on the most prominent websites available. Same theory as the freeway traffic: find the captive audience and throw some ads up! Only problem is you and every other business along with the professional independent marketers are all doing the same thing.

All that competition is great for the website owners because they can charge extremely high click costs and CPM costs. In fact, I have found several keywords on Google that command per click prices of $100 plus! That’s absurd! Your landing page and your conversion tracking needs to be flawless in order for your business to survive in a marketing venue such as that. My advice: don’t bother. Save your money and allocate it into other marketing ideas, such as this one: Own More Internet.

What the heck does Own More Internet mean? It means that you should own more locations on the internet that promote your website rather than try to push traffic from a single paid traffic source. Remember how I mentioned those millions upon millions of other websites that generate very little traffic every month? There’s your gold mine. Develop a small presence on those little websites that don’t get much exposure.

Let’s say you publish a free blog on an obscure site in a remote corner of the internet. The only cost involved is your time. Let’s say you spend a half hour building it (an experienced blogger could do it in 5 minutes, a complete newbie would take about an hour). You work on the blog and publish a few articles and place links on every page that points back to your real site, the one that pays the bills.

Now that you have your little blog, you start tracking the traffic. In one month it draws 30 visitors; one visitor per day. And out of those thirty visitors for the month, you discover that five of them clicked your links and visited your mothership website. Exciting, huh? You received five free visitors, and more than likely that little blog will continue to push five new visitors to your primary website every month.

So what, you say? How is five little measely visitors going to help you in the long run? Well, if you owned 100 of those little blogs, you would have 500 visitors every month. And after you build those little blogs, you have no more costs. 500 free visitors every month, imagine that. If those visitors were for the keywords that cost $100 per click at Google, that would be $50,000 per month of free traffic. Are you starting to understand the concept?

Want more traffic? It’s simple: Own More Internet. Build as many free pages about your company and or services and then link back to your main site. Once you’re done with the first one, build another. Rinse and repeat. Believe me, it works. I personally own several hundred thousand locations on the internet that point to my products and or services. And trust me when I say the more internet you own, the more profitable you become!

How To Grow Your Business By Using JV Partnership

Written by sitebuilditreview on Saturday, May 9th, 2009 in Building Traffic.

JV partnership is one of the most powerful tactics to use in growing your business. However, if you approach this in the wrong direction, it can backfire your business.

Before entering into a JV partnership, you need to consider what you can bring to the table before you consider to take benefits out from it. This is one of the most crucial criteria for you to succeed in a JV partner relationship. You need to think how you can help your partners to grow their business as well.

The mindset is to find the right JV partner or partners to make both of your businesses mutually advantageous.

Here are a few suggestions for you to go about connecting with the right candidates and forging an partnership that will benefit everyone involved.

When it comes to getting connected with other online partners, the best way is to get active on message boards and forums. By gathering at places where entrepreneurs with similar goals and interests, you have a good chance of finding a JV partner and assisting one another to generate results to your businesses.

Find People Who Have Similar Clientele

Look for people who are marketing products that compliment your product line in certain manner. This type of cross promotions will skyrocket your business almost immediately.

Besides forums, check into blogs. Bloggers may turn out to be an ideal partner for either a short term project or something long lasting for a few years.

You also have the chance to do some looking around the blog, providing you with the chance to get to know the thought processes of the blog owner. If you think the you could have a successful partnership after checking out the site, you can then approach blog owners directly.

Another way to lurk around is by using keywords to search the Internet. What you want to do is employ keywords that have to do with the markets you want to approach.

By learning who is already involved with those markets and checking out their ads and general online presence. This will help you to be in a position to get a better understanding of what’s behind the scenes and determine if it is worth your time to approach a particular individual for a potential partnership.

You also have the advantage of seeing how your possible new partner is making use of those types of assistance.

    Don’t Limit Your Search

Attending events sponsored by chambers of commerce, business associations, and conferences where entrepreneurs gather might provide you with some great opportunities.

Traffic Generation Tips - How To Use Forum Marketing

Written by ChristianOC on Thursday, May 7th, 2009 in Building Traffic.

No matter what product or service you’re selling, somewhere on the internet there is a group of people discussing their trials and tribulations regarding your product or service.

They gather together to share their triumphs and failures with their internet friends, all with the hope that they can discover viable information regarding your product and service. Now that you know people are talking about your service, why aren’t you talking to them?

Forums are a great place to market your business. In fact, most forums offer vendors a direct means to advertise their product or service through either classified advertisements or banner advertisements. Usually you will find an obvious link for advertisers, such as “advertisers click here”.

Some forums will allow businesses to advertise through a PPC platform. It stands for “pay per click”, and you will pay a small amount of money for every click.

Other forums will will charge what is called CPM. It stands for “Cost Per Thousand”. With CPM, you pay per thousand impressions. Even if nobody clicks on your advertisement, you will still pay. CPC is generally used for performance marketing while CPM is used for brand awareness.

Sometimes a forum will only offer advertising through an actual advertising network like Google Adwords, Adbrite, or Adsonar. For a forum owner, joining an advertising network removes the headache of managing advertising campaigns and organizing and tracking click costs. It is much easier to join a network such as Adwords and simply place the Adsense code on your website. Then a forum owner can allocate all of this time to running his website while Google tracks the click costs.

When you join any of the above mentioned marketing platforms, you can specifically select which websites will display your ads. This is typically referred to as “placement targeting”. You and your competitors will be able to bid on ad positions on the exact sites you want to advertise your product. Your ad will only be displayed if you’re the top bidder.

Outside of paying for actual advertising on a forum, you can also advertise directly on the forum when you are an active member. This is a very effective means of marketing your product or service, although it can be time consuming.

Most forums allow their registered users to have a personal profile. Within that profile there are usually two places to place a link back to your website: the homepage field and your signature section.

The homepage field is nothing more than a field to place an active link to your website. It usually doesn’t include a description nor can you use it to place anchor text; it will only contain the actual URL to your website.

The signature field allows much more room for marketing your website, services, products, or any combination of the three. You can actually pitch your product in your signature with at least two or three sentences and then follow up with one or two links to your website, including anchor text.

It’s important to remember to always follow the forum rules when you are marketing your business. It’s considered spam to make a new post that’s specifically about pitching your services (unless it’s authorized by the moderator and/or posted in a specific section such as “the spam zone”).

The best way to market in a forum is to actively participate and provide useful information with every post. Write a solid pitch for your business and or services within your signature. Then, let your signature do the marketing for you. If you take the time to honestly help other members of the forum, you will generate traffic to your website and ultimately develop new customers.

Generation Of High Conversion Traffic The Blogger’s Way!

Written by pmutrie on Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 in Building Traffic.

Gaining knowledge and educating yourself is a great way to learn by visiting other fellow entrepreneur blogs. In today’s Web 2.0, there are many blogs and they have many other uses than just giving their viewers a handful of knowledge and education. How about this!

Generation of Traffic to your own landing page (sales page) by means of using others blogs!

It is as easy as 1-2-3 to create presence on a blog that doesn’t even belong to you, which in return drives traffic back to your landing page. If you have a business on the Internet today, I highly recommend you utilizing this strategy to generate traffic to your landing page!

This is all you have to do to generate traffic to your own landing page by visiting others blogs:

    1. Find blogs that get a lot of traffic and allow you to comment.

    2. Visit those blogs on a daily basis and search for new posts.

    3. Read the new posts and educate yourself. There is a wealth of knowledge that can be learned and education is key!

    4. You will notice a comment box at the bottom of their full post which allows you to enter in your full name, email address (which will not be visible to others) and a box to enter in your landing page URL so do just that. Enter in your full name, email address and landing page URL.

    5. Then fill in your comment of what you thought of the post, use your name again as your signature and again, enter your landing page URL.

The viewers that visit these high traffic blogs also view the comments that other visitors leave about the posts! What a better way to do business, right? If you just take a fraction of your time a day, visit 5 or more blog sites that generate high traffic and utilize this method of traffic generation, you will find that your landing page will generate much more traffic just by you taking that fraction of your time and leaving a small comment that leads right back to your landing page!

Here’s a “Bonus Tip” for Twitter users! You can also gain a lot of new followers by adding your Twitter ID under your signature as well. I have time tested and proven this over the past 6 months with myself and my students. By generating traffic to your Twitter account, you are also generating traffic to your landing pages by means of your profile URL.

I look forward to seeing your success online!

Online Copywriting Tips to Increase Opt-Ins These 5 Ways

Written by CathyG on Saturday, April 18th, 2009 in Building Traffic.

Online marketers have one major goal: increase your opt-in list. We measure success by list size. A big list *usually* means you are doing something right.

A big list won’t do much good unless it’s also a targeted list. That means you have a list of subscribers who will stay with you when you send solo mailings, inviting them to buy a product or attend a teleseminar. They won’t run away screaming when your headline has a typo or your link doesn’t work, unless it happens a lot.

All five solutions depend on having what I call an irresistible freebie: a giveaway to thank visitors for signing up. We also assume you display your privacy policy. “We respect your privacy” is the phrase of choice.

Technique #1: Create a Squeeze Page: When visitors go to your home page, they see a sales letter for your no-cost ezine. A squeeze page forces them to sign up or leave: they’re “squeezed” into a decision.

In some markets, the squeeze page works really well. In others, you will turn away your most promising leads. Typically, squeeze pages work best when you provide some content instead of just a sales pitch.

You also have to think about returning visitors. They’ve already subscribed. Do they have to re-subscribe? Or is there a button to click to enter the site?

Of course, you have to write good copy for your squeeze page. You need to demonstrate strong benefits and you need to understand the problems that motivate your visitors to seek solutions.

You can also try a hovering pop-up. I have them on both my sites and they work. But I would test against a page with no pop-up, just a subscription box.

Technique #2: Add a graphic to make your virtual ezine look like a magazine. These days people are visual. They like to see images. So if your opt-in page isn’t converting, make your ezine seem tangible.

This technique works for many markets, assuming your ezine has a strong name. But it can backfire in other markets. I tested my opt-in page with and without the “sleepy-cat” logo. The plain ugly page got a higher conversion rate.

Technique #3: Integrate your blog, articles and ezine. Send blog visitors to your ezine and vice versa. Some ezine authors post recent blog article titles in each issue. Of course your article resource box will link to your ezine, too.

Typically visitors judge your ezine by what they read on your blog. Or they like an article and want to learn more.

Article marketing offers a strong resource for opt-in lists because you’re most likely to get targeted traffic. They know something about you. In contrast, people who go to your pay per click (ppc) ad may be fishing. Nearly everyone who adds subscribers from ppc or exchange list reports feeling disappointed. You’ll get subscribers but they won’t be high quality.

Technique #4: Buy advertising in ezines that also reach your target market. This technique works if you identify high-quality ezines that target your market. You also need copywriting skills to create ads that motivate readers to click over to your site.

Good ezine ads may cost a few hundred dollars or more,. But they can be far more effective than a year of networking at rubber chicken lunches.

Technique #5: Develop joint ventures. This technique will skyrocket your numbers if you can make everything come together.

Here’s how it works. You offer a gift to someone else who plans a promotion. Your gift gets seen by everyone who buys the target product. Your gift description will be seen by everyone who visits the landing page of the venture.

This technique works only if your joint venture partners reach the same target market that you are trying to reach. If you’re a business coach, you won’t benefit from a joint venture with a weight loss coach (unless the coach works in companies). If you’re trying to reach a highly spiritual target market, you need to partner with others who share your specific vision.
